Plus Loan Repayment
The repayment period for a Direct Parent PLUS Loan begins at the time the PLUS loan is fully disbursed, and the first payment is due within 60 days after the final disbursement. However, for Direct PLUS Loans with a first disbursement date on or after July 1, 2008, the parent may defer repayment:
1) While the student on whose behalf the parent borrowed the loan is enrolled on at least a half-time basis,
2) For an additional six months after the student ceases to be enrolled at least half-time.
Graduate Students, enrolled in school at least half-time, can also request for an in-school Plus loan deferment. Students that do not request for a deferment will be requested to make Plus loan payments immediately, since Plus loans do not offer a grace period.
Students that fall below half-time status or have graduated will be required to pay their Plus loan
In most cases, the Direct Loan Servicing Center will automatically grant an in-school deferment on your Direct PLUS Loan based on information reported by your school to the U.S. Department of Education showing that you are enrolled at least half time. The Direct Loan Servicing Center will notify you of the deferment and of your option to cancel the deferment and begin making payments on your loan.
If your school does not report the enrollment information that is needed for the Direct Loan Servicing Center to automatically grant an in-school deferment on your Direct PLUS Loan, you will need to submit an In-School Deferment Request form to the Direct Loan Servicing Center. You may obtain an In-School Deferment Request form from your school’s financial aid office, online, or by calling the Direct Loan Servicing Center. Your school must certify your enrollment status on the deferment request form.
The in-school deferment on your Direct PLUS Loan will remain continuously in effect until you graduate or drop below half-time status.
Your first payment will be due within 45 days after the deferment end date.
The Direct Loan Servicing Center will notify you 60 days before your deferment ends.
